El Clasico Fixture Postponed

Matchday 10 of the Spanish La Liga was marred by the postponement of the first El Clásico of the season. The Barcelona vs Real Madrid fixture was scheduled to be on the 26th of October at Camp Nou stadium. However, the Spanish football federation (RFER) postponed the match due to security reasons. The political situation in Catalonia has crept into football on several occasions in which soccer players and coaches alike have used their platform to advance their political views.

The security risk that led to the postponement of the El Clasico match was prompted by the heavy sentencing of nine Catalan separatist leaders. The individuals that protested to convert Catalu?a into an independent state were sentenced to between 9 and 13 years in prison. There have since been several protests in the city since then. With the history of Clasico games, the decision to push the game to December was an easy one for La Liga.
